Sony – A Modern Fable of Terrible PR and Customer Relations

Sony Nex 7

Back in August 2011 Sony announced their high end Nex-7, a mirrorless, interchangeable lens camera to lead the existing Alpha series. With a hugely impressive feature list the Nex-7 became arguably the most anticipated camera of the year, packing in DSLR features and quality into a more compact body.

Sony also announced that the Nex-7 would go on sale to the general public in October later that year, but with the terrible flooding in Thailand hitting the Sony production chain they were unable to meet this original time frame. Across the web there was widespread disappointment, but obvious understanding of the unforeseen circumstances.

Since then however Sony have consistently demonstrated their ability to alienate and frustrate their loyal customers. As we approach the end of January only a small fraction of customers have received their Nex-7, but the real issue is the total lack of communication from Sony on when additional stock is due or inconsistent statements from service staff and retailers alike.

Where to Start with SEO and How to Get an SEO Job

How to get an SEO Job

Whether you’re looking for your first job or a career change the SEO industry offers you a fantastic opportunity right now. I’ve worked in the industry since 2005 and basically self taught myself all of the necessary and desirable skills using the steps below.

I’ve also recruited a number of individuals into SEO roles over the last 3.5 years, so I like to think I’m well placed to advise on how to become a highly desired SEO candidate.

In all my time recruiting SEO candidates and talking to others in a similar boat, two consistent themes have been ever present through the identification and interview phase:

  1. There is lots of people who claim they do SEO, but get found out very quickly.
  2. There is very low supply and very high demand for those who clearly do know how to do SEO.

The beauty of the SEO industry today is that learning SEO will broaden your skill set into many other areas that you may specialise in at a later point in time. No longer is SEO simply about knowing the technical requirements that should be embedded into a website, now its about social media and participation, graphic design, content generation and so much more.

World Elite Soccer – Progress and Next Steps

World Elite Soccer

As 2011 has drawn to a close I wanted to spend some time updating everyone on the progress we’ve made over the last 12 months and our immediate next steps.

First of all I appreciate that for many its been a rather frustrating 12 months of waiting around, hoping that the game would come back to life in all its former glory.

Obviously that hasn’t happened and whilst that’s as frustrating for me as it has been for many of you, delaying our planned re-launch has absolutely been the right step to take.

In hindsight my biggest regret through 2011 was placing the site back live and opening slots for BETA so early. At the time we were confident that we’d have something playable by March, but with many unforeseen problems rearing their head we’ve ultimately failed to live up to those expectations. For that I apologise and thank those who’ve shown patience and understanding – I do promise (with much confidence) that your patience will ultimately be rewarded in 2012.

Flying Business Class With Singapore Airlines

Singapore Airlines Boeing 777-300ER

Its fair to say that even a particularly negative, picky individual (some would class me in that bucket) would struggle to find fault with the quality of service offered by Singapore Airlines. This is backed up by their 1st place finish in the 2011 Asia Airlines Awards and 2nd overall in the world category.

Despite flying over 60,000 miles in 2011 across various carriers (Emirates, Singapore Airlines, JetStar and United) it wasn’t until recently that I got to properly experience a long haul business class flight with Singapore Airlines and to cut a long story short – it was excellent.

The flight was from Changi International Airport in Singapore to Manchester International Airport in the UK, roughly 14 hours of flight time with an hour stop over in Munich.

My Best Business Books List

Book Shelf

As part of my bucket list I set a goal to read 500 books many of which are on the subject of business including topics such as leadership and entrepreneurship. The following article will be regularly updated over time as I come across new business books that I would recommend.

I’m not intending to review these books in detail as there is far more talented individuals out there than I in this field, but hopefully my list can help give you some direction if you’re looking for good business books to read.

Should you wish to review the full list of business books I have read you can see them on my books I have read page.

Best iPad Stylus For Note Taking

Adonit Jot Pro Stylus

Its not for everyone, but one of the handy applications for the iPad and other comparable tablets is the ability to scribble notes into third party apps like NoteShelf. Typically you have two choices for using these kinds of applications:

  1. Use your fingers
  2. Use a stylus

Using your fingers is frankly not a real option since the chances of you being able to write something that is remotely legible in the future is non-existent. That leaves us with 1 option, buying a stylus.

Its not exactly the sexiest purchase you’ll ever make, but purchasing a good one will make the experience a lot more gratifying. Having used a few my personal favourite at the moment is the Adonit Jot Pro Stylus.

A Good Way to Report on Your Link Popularity Over Time

Link Popularity

A critical ingredient to driving a successful search engine optimisation (SEO) strategy is link acquisition. Measuring your progress objectively in this area over time can however be relatively tricky because many of the third party tools that provide the data can move the goal posts and change the rules of the game.

For example, imagine you’re driving a very successful outreach programme and you’ve acquired 150 incremental links in a single month. You get a fresh index of your link count from a tool such as SEOMoz, Linkdex or Majestic SEO but find your numbers have actually declined vs. the prior month. Queue the disappointing feeling and questions of why?

Best iPad 2 Productivity Apps

iPad 2 Productivity Apps

I’ve been one of those guys that’s forever wanted an iPad and/or iPhone, but I’ve always struggled to justify the need and whenever I’ve managed to convince myself of the need I always think “I’ll wait for the next model” and thus the cycle continued.

Well I finally bit the bullet and bought an iPad2 this year believing that the iPad 3 (when its finally released) can’t possibly add to many new, must have features that would make it worth the wait.

Whilst the iPad has many uses one of the primary reasons I finally decided to buy one was task management and general productivity improvements.
